Grilled King Oyster mushrooms and Chinese meat balls with crudely chopped green onions on a bed of wonton noodles in a simple beef broth. Warm, comforting, and perfect for cold winter evenings when the sun sets at 4:30pm. Don’t forget to wash it down with some hot tea.
Between getting the flu, deadlines and life - here is a warmup that got a little out of hand. I’ve wanted to always draw one of the characters from the show, so here you go “Raven Queen”. Something a little more realistic… alright - back to the cover.
It’s 4am in the heart of Osaka’s red light district. Sleep has yet to find me. I leave the comfort of my cot and head out for a stroll along the polluted river cutting through the city as dolled up whores and gigolos eyed me down. I enter a noodle house and am greeted by timid and respectful women in kimonos. They walked me down a hall of paper walled rooms, the air is heavy with cigarette smoke and the warm comforting scent of boiling broth. Low humming and mumbles vibrate the air as you pass rooms with men in suits flirting with their call girls over bottles of sake. They show me to a small room overlooking the river, poured me a hot cup of tea, and left me to soak in my own thoughts.
Long pointless story short: I went or the udon sampler. Cold, lightly poached egg with seaweed. Assorted tempura in a savoury broth. Curry soup with chicken karage. And a smiling lady to keep me company.
